With an extended deadline on the PTASP Final Rule, Origami Risk hosted a June webinar for public transit agencies on the rule's requirements, components of an SMS, how Origami Risk can help to meet the PTASP requirements, and more.

In June 2020, Origami presented a webinar to help public transit agencies navigate the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) Final Rule, as the deadline had been extended to December 31, 2020. Led by Sam Gabal (Senior Sales Executive), Peter Morrical (Senior Client Executive), and Luke Bernardi (Business Development Representative), the presentation focused on: Defining the requirements and components of a safety management system (SMS) Demonstrating how Origami can help meet those requirements A case study illustrating how Origami helped a transit agency client build out functionality to support an SMS Fielding questions from the participants, leveraging the expertise from Origami’s Sean Salvas (Senior Market Strategy Lead, EHS)

Furthermore, the presenters highlighted how Origami’s safety solutions can help transit agencies to not only be compliant with the PTASP final rule, but also go above and beyond a check mark exercise in compliance with a software solution that can promote a proactive culture of safety.

Defining PTASP and How Origami Can Help

Bernardi kicked the presentation off by emphasizing the importance of the regulation and defining the various elements of PTASP, including an SMS. SMS requirements were defined in detail, along with an explanation of how Origami helps meet the compliance requirements:

While some organizations may approach the PTASP regulation as simply a checkbox exercise, the rule represents an opportunity to go beyond simple SMS compliance to leverage software to transform transit agencies’ culture of safety with tools to empower organizations to be more proactive. Moving to a proactive safety culture means that not only can near misses, risks, and hazards be captured and reported on, but preventative measures can be put in place to reduce incidents and injuries. Origami’s anonymous incident reporting, audits/investigations modules, and robust reporting tools provide the efficiency, transparency, and insight to make that move a reality.

SMS Compliance Demonstration

Next, Gabal demonstrated several features within Origami that help organizations meet SMS requirements, including:

  • Dashboard and SMS Management
  • Hazard Identification & Assessment
  • Safety Audits & Inspections
  • Employee Training

Case Study -- Collaborating on an SMS

To highlight Origami’s highly collaborative service model, Morrical presented on how his team partnered with a public transit client with over 50 million riders annually to build out an SMS solution. He worked with the risk management and safety teams to create a plan based on the PTASP requirements to move toward compliance, implementing features including a safety hazard reporting feature, shown below.

Based on the data captured by the web and mobile portals, reports can be generated on a total and per revenue mile basis, with examples below.

What Origami Can Do for Your Safety Organization
